(Rock Falls, IL) Gearhead Racing Fans is a growing group of NASCAR fans who have taken it upon themselves to help NASCAR Busch Series racing teams with needed funding. The weak US economy has led to many of the teams in the nationally televised racing series to either close down or run a limited schedule due to a lack of corporate sponsorship. The series' current points leader, driver Todd Bodine's Herzog-Jackson owned Chevy, is without a sponsor and is contemplating its future in the 2003 series.

Gearhead is currently an associate sponsor on the #10 Nesquick Ford driven by Scott Riggs. The group also assisted driver Johnny Sauter's effort at Daytona in the season's opening race. Many more sponsorships are expected as the group's membership continues to grow.

In return for their membership fee, Gearhead members are eligible to share in the group's sponsorship benefits, many of which are not available to the typical race fan. Benefits such as sponsor's access at the race track, preferred parking at most tracks, autographed items, and other items are highly coveted by race fans. Membership fees start at $50 per year and give the member full access to the sponsor benefits.

Tom Myers, founder of Gearhead Racing Fans, says the concept of the group is very simple. "To my knowledge, this type of support has never before been offered by the fans to race teams. Other fan-based groups have tried to finance an entire race team from car ownership to primary sponsorship, but that takes too much money and spreads the benefits of sponsorship too thin among the members," Myers said. "Gearhead's concept is unique in that we don't cater to any one team in particular. We pool the fans' money, offer sponsorship to a selected team, and distribute the sponsorship benefits among the group according to which race the member is attending."

Scott Riggs, driver of the Nesquick Ford said, "Gearhead Racing Fans is what racing is all about," said Riggs. "The fans are the reason sponsors gravitate to NASCAR. It's the sponsors like Gearhead that keep the fans coming back by offering up rewards for loyalty."

ROCKFORD, Ill. May 23 2004-- Can four engineers shake up the Championship Off Road Racing Super Buggy Sportsman Division with a compact, Honda-powered buggy that draws its design cues from the college Mini-Baja racing circuit?

That's the intent of team led by vehicle designer and racer John C. Frana. His racing team will unveil a buggy with a mid-frame mounted engine, dual A-arm front and rear suspension, custom CV joints and other innovations when the circuit kicks off Memorial Day weekend at Trollhaugen Ski Area, Dresser, Wis. The Frana Group's entry is a fresh design in a race series that heavily relies on the VW Beetle design.

"I wanted a design that would shake up the class," says Frana, 27, chief engineer at Rockford Acromatic Products, which makes CV joints and U joints for the automotive aftermarket. "We looked into getting into the Super Buggy class and it seemed that just to get a used car would be at least $10,000, minus the engine and transmission. For that kind of money we decided to build one."

While he's new to the series, he's not new to vehicle design. Frana, a 1999 graduate of the University of Illinois with a bachelor's of science degree in mechanical engineering, captained the university's Mini Baja team. College teams from around the U.S. build off-road vehicles to survive the punishment of rough terrain. Frana designed his team's vehicles in 1998 and 1999. Frana's 1998 design won second in maneuverability. The 1999 entry won firsts in maneuverability and hill climbing, and third in acceleration.

Frana says the Super Buggy class is the Formula One of off road racing. With few rules, it allows designers to innovate.

"You have a lot more freedom than a lot of classes where you have to use this transmission, that suspension or a certain frame," he says. "For Super Buggy, there isn't a maximum size or minimum weight. You can make it as large or as light as you want."

Frana says his buggy is lighter, stronger and handles better than rear engine buggies. The frame is made steel tubing. The mid-engine design makes his buggy more compact. Frana says the 1.6-liter Honda engine is powerful and there are plenty of aftermarket parts readily available.

Frana's crew chief is his brother, Jeff Frana. Jeff Frana, 25, a Michigan Technological University grad with a mechanical engineering technology degree, was crew chief the last two years for Scott Taylor, the 2003 CORR Pro-2 Champion. Jeff Frana's crewmates are fellow MTU alums � engineering grads Ryan Brumund of Barrington, Ill., and Eric Bode of Buffalo Grove, Ill. All three men were on Michigan Tech's Mini Baja teams. The crew has 16 years experience designing and building off road racing vehicles and 13 years additional racing experience.

Five months later, Brown's goal for Sarasota's legendary 4th of July weekend Festival came to fruition with over 70+ boats in combined attendance from both the Super Boat International Productions (SBIP) and APBA Offshore Powerboat Racing Association race competitors.

With millions of dollars of high tech equipment on display and the thousands of fans and Offshore Racing Legends in attendance, this year's racer competitors have been more then thrilled.

Today, in a historical move announced by Super Boat International Productions President, John Carbonell, and the APBA Offshore Racing Association President, Jim Poplin, the two organizations have agreed to share the water by attending each others events, while protecting the individual personalities of each racing organization.

At the Drivers Meeting, the news received a standing ovation from the racing community.

"It has only assured us all that we have made the right decision, and it's a move that allows us to return the sport of offshore powerboat racing back to the racers. We couldn't be more pleased," said Poplin.

Carbonell was equally enthusiastic, as was his Series Presenting Sponsor, Reggie Fountain of Fountain Powerboats.

"We're glad to see it occur. We have more boats and that means good racing. It's good from a promotions aspect and we will have even more competition to showcase on our television shows. It's been years since we've had this kind of turnout here in Sarasota. This whole program is good for racing and I have always been for what's good for racing," said Fountain.

In fact, the Fountain Powerboat Facility in Washington, North Carolina will host the upcoming Fountain - Super Boat International Pro Am Race and Kilo Runs, now listed on the APBA Offshore roster as part of their APBA Offshore GMC Pro Grade Series National Tour.

The event will also award race teams with their choice of either an SBI or APBA/U.I.M. World Championship Kilo Record, or both, this August.

While APBA Offshore will move forward with its own GMC Milwaukee Offshore Gran Prix at the end of July, as well as the Emerald Coast Offshore Gran Prix in Fort Walton Beach, Florida in September, SBI will move forward with the Dania Beach Centennial Super Boat Grand Prix this weekend added to September's racing event at their 13th Annual New York Super Boat International Grand Prix.

The two organizations, however, will run their teams side by side for the remainder of the season line-up, including hosting their National Championships at the same time and place this fall in Deerfield Beach, Florida.

By far, the announcement that both SBI and APBA Offshore will showcase their fleets at 2004 Key West World Championships was probably the most applauded of all.

Now, SBI World Champions will share the podium with the APBA/U.I.M. GMC Pro Grade World Champions, at a venue where legends in the sport have traditionally been born.

"We've been working on the bigger picture since February, and to be honest, I used the credibility of this race to help the process," said Brown, a veteran racer himself.
"My goal was to un-fractionalize the sport and get back to racing. I think everyone can agree that the turnout, with everyone racing here together, has far exceeded our expectations, and it has really benefited the fans."

Brown added that the cooperation between the teams and the groups themselves truly reflects a newer, more positive image of the sport from which to move forward with.

While Brown was key in getting the groups together, as was Fountain, credit also goes to Carbonell, Poplin, and Bob Bull, C.E.O. and new five-year license holder of the APBA Offshore sanction. Steven David, past President of the American Power Boat Association (A.P.B.A.) and current APBA Offshore Chief Referee joined in as well.

The powerhouses are confident that they have satisfied the racers, the fans and the venues with this move.

"It was the right thing to do for the sport, and it's evident that the racers obviously want to do this. I'm a racer myself and it's been ten years since we've all raced together. We need to remove the politics from the sport and return it back to having fun," said Bull.

"We've both brought a whole lot to the table. Our operations, technical and safety teams are working well together, and our guys like the new competition coming to our water. Ending it all in Key West is the best news of all, and I think our move today put the power back into the sport of powerboat racing," said Carbonell.

Gray Tiger Racing Inc., located in Cave Creek, Arizona was incorporated in March 2002 for the purpose of creating a race team to compete in the Grand America Road Racing Association's new premier series, the Daytona Prototypes. The team is planning on having a car on the track by the end of this year and is planning on running a two car team in 2004.

The cars are designed by Terry Rohr, and the chassis and body designs have been approved by Grand American. Construction on the first chassis and body is planned to start by mid April. Current plans call for utilizing the Honda V-6 engine, however the engine configuration has not yet been approved by Grand American. Grand American requires all engines to be either six or eight cylinders, must be less than 5.5 liters, and the specific configuration must be approved by them. "We would love to run the Honda engines in these cars." said Rohr, "We realize that we might be giving up a little power to the V-8's, but feel that there is such a large following for Hondas here in the U.S. that we really would like to have Honda on the sides of our cars."

Ledgewood, NJ April 7, 2004 -- In Ledgewood, New Jersey, people were gathering in flocks to see the Ledgewood Mall Racing Spectacular. The event, sponsored by DARE, was held March 13 and 14. Sixty-five racecars were entered into the event. Local IPOWER DASH Series driver Ricky Gonzalez was one of them.

Gonzalez entered his car into the full bodied class which in return, much to his excitement garnered him a third place trophy over all.

Not to forget his roots, Gonzalez named his car "Boriqua", which means you are from Puerto Rico. "The Hispanic fans really went crazy. We signed 300 hero cards at the show. It was a wonderful weekend," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez is no rookie when it comes to racing. He knows that traveling from race to race in order to compete is part of the job. He plans to take his prize-winning car to Hickory, along with many other DASH Series drivers and teams, to test in preparation for the upcoming April 10 race at Hickory Motor Speedway.

"Traveling is a difficult part of my racing. The closest race is about eight hours away. Most of the races are much further. I've been racing in touring divisions for the past five years, so traveling is just part of the deal."

When asked about a potential DASH race near his home area Gonzalez's interest peaked. "I would love to see the DASH cars in New Jersey. I think there are a lot of fans that would really enjoy our style of racing."

Gonzalez is not just a racecar driver though. He has a graphics company, plus he has played as a professional musician for close to 10 years. Nevertheless, make no mistake, this entrepreneur/musician knows where his biggest passion lies, and it is within racing. "The competition and speed attract me to race, plus I love the interaction with all the fans.

Gonzalez is carving his own path when it comes to racing. You can see him racing in the IPOWER DASH Series, and he is slated to run at Martinsville in the upcoming NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Kroger 250. Tune in to find out more about Ricky Gonzalez as the season progresses!
